Mexican Cantera Fire Opal
The Cantera Opal is a type of fire opal and is formed from “Rhyolite”, a kind of volcanic rock.
Cantera means “quarry”, these stones come from quarries in Magdalena, Queretaro, and possibly other Mexican locations. These opals are sometimes cut in the rhyolitic host material if it is hard enough to allow cutting and polishing and is what gives it it’s name “Cantera Opal.”
These are only found in Mexico and are similar to Australian boulder opals, but the host rock is rhyolite rather than ironstone.
Dimensions: 15mm x 17mm
